Love Your Skin with Antioxidants

Posted in Skin Care

AntioxidantsAntioxidants are great for our skin because they help protect our skin from free radicals. The number of different antioxidants is immense; some examples of antioxidants are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts. The term “free radicals” are described as problematic. Free radicals get greedy; they don’t just damage one cell, they set off a chain of damages and damage multiple cells.

Antioxidants Vitamin C and A can be applied topically to our skin to help reduce free radical damage. Collagen gets broken down by the free radicals, when an antioxidant is applied it penetrates into the dermal layers of the skin. Collagen production is then able to continue which will give your skin more elasticity and strength. Increased collagen production will help the skin appear younger! Antioxidants can reduce acne, age spots, and fine lines and wrinkles.

Reducing Acne

When vitamin A is applied to the skin, it is called a retinoid. Keratin plugs are one of the biggest causes of acne; vitamin A penetrates deep down into the pores to remove them. Acne is also known to produce too much oil. Vitamin A opens the pore that helps to reduce the amount of oil.

Reducing Age Spots

Sun exposure speeds up the melanin production in the body, and in time the pigments become more concentrated, resulting in age spots. Vitamin C, in particular, helps reduce melanin pigmentation. Another great antioxidant for sun damage and age spots is Resveratrol. Resveratrol is found in fruits like red grapes, blueberries, and cranberries. It’s also found in nuts and red wine. Not only is it great for age spots, it has great anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is the source of many skin conditions.

Reducing Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Free radicals slow the production of collagen that helps create fine lines and wrinkles. Antioxidants help neutralize those free radicals to slow the production of fine lines and wrinkles.

Green Tea

Green tea is another great antioxidant for your skin. It helps prevent collagen breakdown and reduces inflammation in the skin. It is recommended to have multiple antioxidants in your regimen and diet, because they work best that way.
