Evening of Remembrance

Our inspiration for the Evening with a Purpose is to honor our beloved Proserpi-Schlechter Center for Plastic Surgery employee and friend, Sylvia Derr, RN, whose fiercely fought battle against breast cancer came to an end on August 12, 2013. Sylvia worked tirelessly for over a decade as our OR recovery nurse. Despite receiving her weekly chemotherapy treatments, Sylvia worked long days, never called in sick, and never complained. Her energy was focused on passionately nursing our cosmetic patients through surgery recovery. Sylvia refused to let her cancer get in the way of doing what she truly loved, nursing and helping others.
Sylvia’s never-ending selflessness and positive attitude taught all of us to look at life a little differently. She found fulfillment and happiness in helping to guide and counsel others through their own battles with cancer, often explaining to them, “attitude is every-thing”.
Sylvia, beloved wife of Craig for 32 years, also found strength in what she considered her most important and rewarding role in life, being a Mom to her four children: Natalie, Matthew, Andrea, and Vincent. She was also a loving daughter, and to her 3 brothers, a supportive sister. Sylvia was a loyal friend to many and often bragged that she was the best secret keeper in town. She was extremely proud of her Italian heritage and loved to reminisce about her childhood in Philadelphia.
Sylvia had a unique way of touching the lives of the people who crossed her path. Throughout her lengthy fight with breast cancer, she served as a model of strength and inspiration to many. Sylvia was a shining example of grace, courage, and incredible strength. Her family, friends, and all those she encountered will forever remember her caring and genuine heart, positive energy, loyalty, and bright smile.
In Sylvia’s honor, proceeds from this event and a portion of the spa services provided during October will be donated to Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
