KYBELLA® Q&A

Posted in KYBELLA®

Spring Ridge Plastic Surgery is thrilled be the first in Berks County and beyond to offer KYBELLA®; the first FDA approved injectable treatment that contours the submental area (AKA the double chin). Recently, Dr. Benjamin Schlechter traveled to Boston, MA to receive his training for KYBELLA®, and he is now eligible to administer this breakthrough treatment to those wishing to improve their profile and feel good about their neck.

Who is ready for a sleeker profile sans the double chin?

Having a double chin makes us look older and heavier because it takes away from a balanced look. Now there is KYBELLA®, a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), AKA the double chin. This injectable works to dissolve submental fat, which is then absorbed by the body within a few weeks. Typically, patients need two to four treatments to see optimal results. The beauty is that once those fat cells are gone, gone forever!

What is KYBELLA®?

KYBELLA® is a deoxycholic acid injection that destroys submental fat cells that give the appearance of a double chin. Deoxycholic acid is a natural occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. As of now, the safe and effective use of KYBELLA® targets only subcutaneous fat in the submental region. There are only a select few plastic surgeons in the United States trained to perform KYBELLA® injections. Dr. Schlechter is one of those few.

How does KYBELLA® work?

We only have so many fat cells in our body. When we gain weight, those fat cells increase in volume, thus making us look heavy. When KYBELLA® is injected into the submental region, it causes the destruction of fat cells in that area. During the treatment, Dr. Schlechter will recline the examination chair and apply a template to under the chin. Using that template as a guide, Dr. Schlechter will perform multiple injections to distribute the KYBELLA® into the submental fat cells. Within 15 to 20 minutes, the treatment is complete. During the weeks that follow, those fat cells are broken down and reabsorbed by the body. Dr. Schlechter will follow up with the patient in that interim.  In clinical studies, patients saw desired results with two to four KYBELLA® treatments spaced approximately one month apart. The maximum number of recommended treatments is six. It is important to note that the safe and effective use of KYBELLA® depends on the use of the correct number and locations for injections, proper needle placement, and administration techniques; all of which Dr. Schlechter has mastered.

How long does KYBELLA® last?

KYBELLA® treatments last indefinitely. Once you reach your optimal level of correction, there is no reason for retreatment.

Who is a candidate for KYBELLA®?

Anyone over the age of 18 who is bothered by a double chin may be a candidate for KYBELLA® injection treatments. Once Dr. Schlechter determines if KYBELLA® is the right treatment for you, he will tailor your treatment plan in order for you to reach optimal results.
